Plantar fasciitis may be a major setback for Tampa Rays, Reid Brignac. He injured his foot during a game while attempting a double play. He has now ended up with some time off. He was given a cortisone injection and is hoping that he will be ready to return in a few days according to Joe Maddon. However, Brignac may not even be ready for the start of the season and this may put his shortstop position in jeopardy.
Plantar fasciitis is caused by inflammation of the large band that runs on the bottom of the foot from the heel to the toes. The band can be injured with sports or even after walking or wearing the wrong shoe. The condition is one of the most common seen by podiatrists in their office.
Symptoms include heel pain after stepping down in the morning and after sitting for a while. Some people will experience burning in the heel toward the end of the day as well.
Treatments include stretching, ice and rest. Early treatment from a podiatrist is very important. Without prompt and proper treatment, the condition can linger and become more difficult to treat. In more difficult cases, cryotherapy and shockwave therapy can be performed in the office and can help avoid surgery.
Dr. Marc Katz, a Tampa podiatrist recommends that you don’t get stopped short by waiting too long for treatment. Your job may depend on it!

I sure wish that I could get some time off to recover from this pain! I have tried everything and now I’m looking at getting some arch supports made. Hoping it will help!
Hi Jessie
My recommendation would be to see a podiatrist. They are physicians that are properly trained to evaluate the patients medical foot and anke condition and determine the treatment. If orthotic devices are needed, a podiatrist is the best source. I have countless patients that go to arch support stores and end up without a real diagnosis and waste their money on devices that are not appropriate. They then end up in my office having wasted their time and money. In many cases they are misdiagnosed and they have fractures and other conditions that linger and place the patient in a harmful situation.
